How challenging is the work you have been assigned to do as a volunteer?

Hi...as a first time applicant, I would like to understand how challenging and rewarding (besides the social, cultural rewards one can expect) is the actual day to day work that one does? Is it professionally challenging? How often is a volunteer rightly matched to their skills? Is it largely desk/academic positions or are there field/active posts one can look forward to? Kindly advise...Thanks
